Join us for La Gran Fiesta de la Calçotada (the Great Calçotada Festival),
one of Catalonia's most important gastronomic festivals and world's largest calçot show!
The festival is held in the medieval town Valls, the place of origin of the calçots.
According to a popular story, calçot was discovered at the end of the 19th century by a peasant from this area known as Xat de Benaiges, who accidentally roasted onion sprouts on fire and instead of throwing them away, he removed the outer burnt layers and tasted the inside, discovering that it had a delicate, sweet flavor.
Currently Valls is the largest calçots growing area in Spain, which have been awarded the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Calçots de Valls" for their exceptional taste.
On the day of the fiesta, there will be numerous stands in the center of the town where we will be able to taste the best calçots with their famous sauce, accompanied by local bread and wines. In addition, there will be grills with different varieties of meat such as salchichón or butifarra de Valls.
But Calçotada is much more than just a tasty meal. It is also a great pretext to hold an outdoor gathering of family or friends, and enjoy the time spent together. Therefore, the program of the fiesta will be full of different accompanying attractions, competitions and shows.
